Although Milwaukee is flowing with antique, resale and vintage shops, one place stands apart from all the Goodwills and Salvation Armies: WasteCap Resource Solutions. Located on the corner of 21st and Michigan streets, this hidden gem is more than your average vintage furniture and knickknack shop; the organization is on a mission to reduce waste and preserve valuable historical materials. They do so by providing a variety of consulting services as well as salvage, deconstruction and clean out work that results in WasteCap reselling items in their warehouse that otherwise would’ve been carelessly discarded. The warehouse is stocked to the brim with various salvaged pieces from foreclosed homes and buildings ready to be razed around the city.
More recently, the warehouse has had a local “celebrity” stopping by. Fox 6’s Rachael Kaye has been working with WasteCap’s Deconstruction and Salvage Supervisor, Pete Brands , on a monthly featured DIY project. Past projects include a window garden box, rope shelf and kneeling garden bench. If you’ve got a love for DIY or are looking for a fun summer project, follow along with Rachael and Pete on the WasteCap blog. All the materials you’ll need are available at the salvage warehouse. If DIY projects aren’t your cup of tea, no worries; you can still support your local nonprofit’s positive mission by checking out WasteCap’s warehouse for vintage and resale pieces that don’t require assembling, along with reclaimed lumber, antique doors, windows and light fixtures in addition to other uniques. For more information on the organization, visit their website or Facebook page.
